Project BJUST: Brain Injury & Juvenile Services Training: Empirically Defining Training Needs and Competencies for Juvenile Services Personnel for Young Offenders with TBI

Community reentry outcomes for formerly justice-involved youth are significantly worse for youth with brain injury (BI) than for their peers without disabilities. Research has illustrated that youth with BI in juvenile justice settings are not receiving the support they need to achieve positive outcomes, possibly because most staff in juvenile correction facilities lack the knowledge and skills they need to adequately support these youth.

To address the urgent need for staff training on evidence-based practices that can successfully improve the transition and life outcomes of justice-involved youth with BI, a set of professional development training competencies were developed for correctional staff in supporting these youth. This was done through an exploratory research project designed to empirically define the training needs and core competencies that juvenile services personnel require to work successfully with justice-involved youth with brain injury and define professional development standards to address those identified needs.

This website presents the final training competencies for staff who support youth with BI in juvenile justice settings organized across six domains: knowledge, screening, eligibility, assessment, intervention, and community reentry.

Competencies

The “Competencies” tab lists the full set of 44 training competencies, organized by domain.

Domains

The “Domains” tab provides the option to sort the competencies by domain area (i.e., knowledge, screening, eligibility, assessment, intervention, and community reentry).

Roles

The “Roles” tab provides the option to sort the competencies by role within juvenile justice settings (i.e., correctional administration personnel, line staff personnel, residential personnel, vocational personnel, parole and probation personnel, education personnel, physical health personnel, and behavioral health personnel) to see which training competencies apply to which role.

Matrix

The “Matrix” tab presents a matrix that displays the full list of competencies and which role they apply to. The competencies are also hyperlinked to their associated domain.

Resources

The “Resources” tab provides hyperlinked resources, organized by competency domain, for ideas and strategies for training aligned with the competencies.
